  In the current era, couples in many countries decide to give birth to children when they are older. This essay will examine reasons for this phenomenon and the detriments caused by it may overshadow the benefits acquired.

  To begin with, people intend to better enjoy their personal lives so they postpo ne the time of having babies. It is acknowledged that couples need to spend a lot of energy and time on taking care of their infants until they grow up. However, looking after children means that parents cannot do anything they want, such as travelling to another continent, like they used to do when there were no children. Thus, it is natural for young people to delay the time of having babies since they cherish their own freedom.

  In addition, economic issues may account for the tendency of delaying parenthood. Raising children, as is known to all, often makes up a large proportion of families’ expenditure. For youngsters who just graduate, they may not have sufficient money to purchase products and services for their children. Then, in order to guarantee better life quality for their children, couples will regard working as a priority to save more money and then give birth to children.

  Although parents may have less economic burden and enjoy their private lives, there exists a drawback that may lead to consequences, namely lacking labor force. When there are fewer children born in the world, it means there will be fewer young people and adults in the next two or three decades. At that moment, governments will face problems caused by aging population, such as a huge expense of social welfare; it will be also difficult for enterprises to recruit suitable and young employees since the number of young people declines.

  In sum, maintaining freedom and saving more money may explain why late parenthood becomes common. Although parents in the current generation can benefit from delaying parenthood, our society may suffer from lacking labor, as well as aging population and other issues.
