  A recent sales study indicates that consumption of seafood dishes in Bay City restaurants has increased by 30 percent during the past five years. Yet there are no currently operating city restaurants whose specialty is seafood. Moreover, the majority of families in Bay City are two-income families, and a nationwide study has shown that such families eat significantly fewer home-cooked meals than they did a decade ago but at the same time express more concern about healthful eating. Therefore, the new Captain Seafood restaurant that specializes in seafood should be quite popular and profitable.

  The first question is whether there is still a market for the new Captain Seafood restaurant under the circumstance that restaurants that are not specialized in seafood cuisine also sell seafood dishes. The argument provides no information about the size of the market for seafood in the city or about the market share those non-seafood restaurants have taken. It is thus likely that there may be no market left for the new Captain Seafood restaurant, because those non-seafood restaurants have probably fully satisfied the entire market.

  The second question is whether the 30 per cent represents a great growth in the actual amount of seafood consumed. Although the percentage is considerable, it may however represent a small amount, because the basis on which the consumption has grown may be small.
